Heating your home – Oil vs. Propane

Tuesday, December 1st

As you look to upgrade or replace the heating system in your home, and certainly as people continue to search for ways to save on heating costs, the question surrounding oil vs. propane continues to come up. The reality is, what’s best and most cost effective is not always a simple question to answer.

In particular people often wonder, which is more energy and cost efficient, Oil or Propane? When answering this many factors come in to play when deciding which to use and the actual cost of the fuel is just one element.

This article recently in The Guardian provides a good comparison between the two. The key to remember is that you get 30% more heat out of litre of oil than you do out of a litre of propane, meaning you would use 30% less litres of oil than you would of propane to heat your house.

Another factor people get concerned about with oil is the fact that you need to have an oil tank. This is a legitimate concern, however today, the oil tanks we install are fiberglass and come with a lifetime warranty on the tank. On top of this, the Government of PEI has made significant changes to the laws around the licenses the installers must have, and how they must be installed, to the point where PEI is now a leader in Oil Tank safety.

What type of heating you choose for your home is a big decision.
